The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) partnered with the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) to create an android application that will disseminate useful information on the deadly rabies virus to millions of mobile phone users. The Memorandum of Agreement for this project was signed last October 2, 2017 at the Animal Health Training and Information Center (AHTIC), BAI Compound, Quezon City.

Dr. Cynthia C. Llanes,  Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) and Dr. Jesusa N. Padilla, Dean of the College of Information Technology represented TIP while Dr. Simeon S. Amurao Jr., Assistant Director, and Dr. Ronnie D. Domingo, OIC of the Animal Health and Welfare Division (AHWD), represented BAI in the MOA signing.

Dr. Domingo explained that one of the essential pillars of the national rabies eradication plan is public education. The said application aims to strengthen this pillar by informing the Filipinos on what rabies is, how to prevent the disease and what to do if they encounter an animal biting incident.

Designing and editing the application “Rabies Free 2020” have been started by AHWD staff and TIP faculty members and students. TIP professors, Dr. Rosmina Cabauatan and Mr. Gerald Cayabyab chose the application as thesis project for their selected students.

“Rabies Free 2020” is expected to be released on Google Play Store before the end of November 2017.
