The Agriculture and Fisheries Technology Forum and Product Exhibition is an annual event organized by the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) and supported by partner R&D institutions under the Department of Agriculture, state universities and colleges (SUCs), and other people’s organizations, to showcase various agricultural technologies generated through research across the country.

The theme for the 14th Agriculture and Fisheries Technology Forum and Product Exhibition, “Agripreneurship: Mainstreaming agriculture and fisheries R&D by delivering technology breakthroughs to farmers and fisherfolks”, highlights the importance of technology packaging and transfer in ensuring that products of research do not go to waste but be utilized by its respective stakeholders.

In line with this year’s theme, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) joined this year’s technology forum and product exhibition and featured some of its high-impact researches, some of which were funded by BAR. The featured researches are as follows: 1) Improvement on processing technologies for meat and meat skin on Black Tiaong (BT) strain; 2) Agronomic performance and nutrient composition of Indigofera zollingeriana under different planting distances and cutting intervals; and 3) Characterization of native pigs in selected areas in Luzon.

During the first day of the activity, the BAI showcased its research products through free tasting of meat products from native pig such as sausage, hotdog and tapa. Keychains made from native pig skin leather, as well as indigofera seeds were also distributed to those who visited the booth. To supply them with basic technical know-hows on the aforementioned research products and on livestock raising, flyers and booklets were also provided to interested visitors. On the final day of the exhibition, the BAI held another free tasting activity, this time native pig lechon was served to visitors who flocked the agency’s booth.

The guest speaker during the event was Senator Cynthia A. Villar, current chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food. In her speech, she stressed the importance of strengthening the R&D system in improving the lives of Filipinos by stating that researches should have practical application that would consequently uplift the lives of our Filipino farmers. Moreover, she encouraged those in the government sector to teach our farmers to mechanize as this would lessen agricultural cost in the long run.

The 14th Agriculture and Fisheries Technology Forum and Product Exhibition was held on August 30, 2018 to September 2, 2018 at the Megamall Megatrade Hall 2 in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.
