BAI Gears Towards Promotion of Organic Agriculture

The Bureau of Animal Industry – National Organic Agriculture Program (BAI-NOAP) conducted a seminar on Philippine National Standards for Organic Agriculture and Organic Livestock Production and Management at the Science and Technology Training Center, Mindanao State University, General Santos City, South Cotabato last November 8-10, 2017.


A total of 40 participants comprising of farmers, veterinarians, agriculturists, agricultural technicians and members of local government unit (LGU) from the different provinces in SOCCSKSARGEN Region has attended the said activity.

Ms. Fe Bien R. Garcia, BAI-NOAP Focal Person, discussed the Philippine National Standard for Organic Agriculture (PNS-OA). She also tackled the following topics namely: 1) different forages that can be used as organic feeds; 2) organic pig and chicken production.

On the other hand, Ms. Justin R. Caoagdan, Science Research Specialist II of the Livestock Research and Development Division (LRDD) discussed basic concepts on animal nutrition and recommended a feed formulation for organic pigs. This was complemented by a demo on simple feed formulation using Pearson Square which was discussed by Mr. Edrian P. Paras. He also presented a brief lecture on soil organic matter as a miscellaneous topic for the seminar.


The group also visited the animal house and the forages grown at a newly-started goat farm in Brgy. Tukawal, Alabel, Sarangani which is owned by Ms. Socorro Fuerzas, one of the participants during the seminar. The participants also get to visit the first Department of Tourism (DOT) – certified organic farm tourism site in SOCCSKSARGEN: the Felicidad Orchard and Garden Organics. The farm is located in Brgy. Katangawan, General Santos City and is owned by Captain James “Bong” Reamon, a retired airline pilot and a multi-awarded inventor.


Dr. Lorna P. Vilbar, the Organic Agriculture Focal Person of DA RFO XII gave the closing remarks and expressed the group’s gratitude towards the conduct of the activity. The certificates of participation were then awarded to the participants together with the free Stylosanthes seeds and flash drives containing the lectures and organic-related videos.
